Getting credentialed is one of the time-consuming tasks at the start of a new medical practice. Although I have several friends who did the work themselves, I would highly encourage any doctor starting a new practice to outsource it to a credentialing expert. For each hospital, insurance company, or managed care company that you wish to be a provider, you will need to submit an application with all the supporting paperwork they ask for. This process can drag on and you will not be paid to see any patient for a particular health plan until you are credentialed and approved. This process can take up to six months, if not longer, which is why it is the very next task to accomplish after a legal business name and entity type are chosen.

Much of the credentialing paperwork is repetitive between HMO’s and hospitals, and therefore the work is easily done by someone earning less than you hopefully do per hour. Same reasoning for phone calls, as you can wait for a long time before a provider representative answers. These experts are often the same folks who are medical billing experts. They can be a fantastic resource for a private practice doctor.

The last step of credentialing often involves an office visit by a managed care representative so you’ll want to postpone that until your office is set up, which may be just a few days before “opening day”.
