About

PrivatePractice.MD (pronounced ?Private Practice dot MD?) is a community of physicians in private practice (and student doctors, residents and fellows) and the supporting experts and advisors who help doctors start and manage their private medical practices. Well-run medical practices result in better patient care and better physician income and quality of life. Healthcare is rapidly changing and destined to change at an even faster pace in the future. This online community provides a resource for new doctors to get advice from experienced doctors and their advisors about how to best set up a new practice, and for all doctors to manage their practices better, with patients, staff and doctors all winning as a result.

Medical school and residency and fellowship training mostly teach doctors about the diagnosis and treatment of disease. There’s so much to learn and so little time that much of the knowledge about HOW to deliver the care never gets taught. Not to mention that most of the medical school professors never actually learned about the business of medicine themselves. So how can they be expected to teach it?

Student doctors: medical students, residents and fellows, need to learn how to work and thrive in the real world where medical care is delivered in so many different settings. Training doesn’t end when a doctor graduates from medical school or their post graduate training. In fact, some of the most important lessons are learned on the job. PrivatePractice.MD strives to bridge that gap between academia and the trenches. Doctors need to really know and understand how “the system” works if they are going to help control costs and deliver superior care to their patients. They need to know how to start and manage their medical practices, even if they are joining a large organization, to be the best doctors they can be. Ignorance about the business of medicine is a detriment and impediment to delivering excellent patient care, not to mention practicing smart medicine and helping control costs. Doctors ignore learning this information to the peril of their patients and their career. Jump in here. Join the discussion. Ask questions.
